چکیده

Stem/branch maintenance respiration for a stand of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora) during the dormant season was examined using an open flow system. The stem/branch respiration rates per unit of volume were closely related to the thickness of the stems and branches, e.g. it decreased with increasing diameter (p<0.0001). When the respiration rates on the various positions were regressed against the stem temperature of the specific position, Q10 values decreased with increasing diameter. The variation of Q10 ranged from 1.28 to 6.4. These Q10 variations should have represented the variation of stem/branch temperature within the tree. The increase in time lag corresponded with an increase in diameter. We estimated the annual maintenance respiration for stem and branches at stand level based on the respiration rate-diameter relation, the Q10-diameter relation, and the pipe model theory. In the Pinus densiflora stand, total annual maintenance respiration was estimated to be 2.55 tChayr (1.40 tChayr for stems, and 1.15 tChayr for branches). This suggests that branch respiration is an important component of total aboveground woody respiration at the stand-level (about 45%). Within the distribution of annual maintenance respiration rates for each D class, the stem and branch of 25-30 cm D class was the highest, and accounted for 33% and 31% of total stem and branch respiration rates, respectively. According to our results and those of previous studies, maintenance respiration correlated positively with annual mean temperature and

Growth and maintenance respiration rates of aspen, black spruce and jack pine stems at northern and southern BOREAS sites.

We measured stem respiration rates during and after the 1994 growing season of three common boreal tree species at sites near the northern and southern boundaries of the closed-canopy boreal forest in central Canada. The growth respiration coefficient (r(g); carbon efflux per micro mole of carbon incorporated in structural matter) varied between 0.25 and 0.76, and was greatest for black spruce ...

Gas exchange of the lowest branches of young Scots pine: a cost-benefit analysis of seasonal branch carbon budget.

A cost-benefit approach was developed to analyze the carbon budget of the lowest Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) branches subject to abscission. In addition to within-branch growth and respiratory costs, the budget included an estimation of a branch's share of the maintenance respiration of the stem and root. A branch was considered productive if the budget was positive. Foliar gas exchange an...

Stem respiration in a closed-canopy upland oak forest.

Stem respiration was measured throughout 1993 on 56 mature trees of three species (Quercus alba L., Quercus prinus L., and Acer rubrum L.) in Walker Branch Watershed, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. A subset of the trees was remeasured during 1994. Diameter increments, stem temperatures and soil water were also monitored. Respiration rates in the spring and summer of 1993 tracked growth rate increments, ...

Comparing stem respiration and growth of jack pine provenances from northern and southern locations.

Stem respiration rates of 31-year-old jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) trees from northern and southern provenances growing in a common garden were compared. At 15 degrees C, the seasonal course of stem respiration rate of northern provenances was not statistically different from that of southern provenances. A relationship existed between maintenance respiration rate and stem growth rate. Bec...

Stem maintenance and construction respiration in Pinus ponderosa grown in different concentrations of atmospheric CO(2).

To determine whether long-term growth in enriched CO(2) atmospheres changes the woody tissue respiration component of aboveground carbon budgets, we measured woody tissue respiration of stems of 3-year-old ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) grown in ambient (350 ppm) or twice ambient (700 ppm) atmospheric CO(2) concentrations in open-top field chambers located in Placerville, CA. Total resp...
